SISTER SAILORS
Stories and Songs of the Seafaring Wives
Join us for a staged reading of a new “epistolary” play inspired by letters from the women who sailed on whaling ships with their Sea Captain husbands. Set in the late 1800s, the play tells the story of the remarkable women and their unique voyages: romantic moonlit nights on deck and debilitating seasickness. And all the while living with the constant fear of gales, hurricanes, typhoons, collisions, and fire. The play focuses on the exchange of letters between two sisters, Essie, who joins her husband on a whaling ship, and Catherine, who stays home to care for their parents and the family store.
Millibo is excited to present this first public reading of Donna Guthrie’s original script.
